It’s gotta be the shoes
This week has been a wash. I came down with a cold and have been trying to shake it for a week. I blame two things, a project that came in on Friday at 4:35pm with a tight timeline and children. Not mine - since I don’t have any.
I was able to make it to Jody’s class last Saturday. I started with a 2 mile run around the track then her crazy first hour class. Surprisingly, I had enough energy for her second hour class, which was what I think is her hardest course – The Velodrome Ride.
Sunday evening I met up with Carol, Holly, Diane, and Pam for dinner. It’s always nice to meet up with the girls during the off-season and find out what everyone has been doing. My way home was another story.
I got about five blocks from home and my jeep died in the middle of the road at a stop sign. I just got it back from the shop five days earlier and I knew something wasn’t right. As the week progressed, it was taking up to 6 tries to get the thing started. As I sat there waiting for the tow truck to come two police officers showed up and pushed me with their truck to a safer location. Turns out my starter needed to be replaced due to the accident. I was sporting a Blue PT Cruiser for the week. I’m back in my Jeep now!
Matt’s class today was a hot one. Physically hot! They really need to turn the heat up in that room a bit more. I think I’m ready to do a race in those 100+ degree temps. Today was my first day back working out in a week. Bill got a good chuckle today when my tall friend got on the bike in front of me. He is so tall that he pulls the seat up to the last notch…that’s about 1.5 feet taller than mine! I’m thankful that he pushed the bike up so his seat wasn’t so close to my handlebars like last time. No matter how much he blocked me I still didn’t get away with talking in class. Hey…my new shoes make it easier to do the work and still have a nice conversation with my neighbors.

What’s next?
My first Duathlon. I just signed up for the Apple Duathlon in Sartell, MN on May 24th. The distance is 5k Run/33k Bike/5k Run (3 mile run/20 mile bike/3 mile run). I used to live on one of the roads that the run takes place on, so I know the terrain and have ran it before. The only thing that scares me is the unknown - since I've never done one before, and that it’s a qualifier for some other big Duathlon which means there are going to be a lot of elite athletes there! Oh well, I’m not doing this to compete against them. I’m doing this for myself. I hope I don’t come in last. That would suck! I should be fine. I’m running somewhere between 6-10 miles at one given time and 20 mile bike ride…that’s just a warm up!
My other plans are still TBD. I would like to do a bike race in ND (home state), I’m still looking for one the first week of August around the Harrisburg, PA area, and the rest will be around the twin cities. Any suggestions would be welcomed.
Yesterday I took the day off from working out. This morning was Matt’s class. We did rolling hills today. First one seated, second one standing, third one a mix. I felt great aside from the fact that I saw stars a few times. It didn’t help that the spin studio felt like a steam room.
Tomorrow is Jody’s two class. I haven’t had a good Jody butt kicking for a couple of weeks.

Found My Mo-Jo (on Tuesday)
Monday I skipped Don’s class. I chose to do 90 minutes on my trainer. For those of you that are on your trainers more than spin bikes this time of year…I commend you for your dedication. I don’t know what it is about sitting on that trainer. I can do a 5.5 hour ride outside and feel great, but 1.5 hours on the trainer makes me what to cry. I’ll suck it up and continue to jump on the trainer from time to time.
Tuesday night I went to the gym and ran for 90 minutes. I think someone slipped me Bill’s beta blocker. I was feeling great my heart rate stayed low and I never went over my AT until the last 2 minutes. I stayed at a comfortable speed for the first 30 minutes then bumped it up every five. After 60 minutes I dropped it back down but then kept bumping it up again until I was in full sprint mode for the last 2 minutes.
This morning I went to spin thinking that Tina was teaching. Ugh, no it was Kristen. Eric and Bill put their iPods on and just did their own thing. I tried to tough it out. I don’t believe there is a mute or volume control button on that women. The music was good, but I couldn’t hear it since she was screamed at the class instead of instructing. We were doing rolling hills, when we sat to do the downhill her voice volume went up. With the speakers only feet away I had to drop down and cover my ears. After 45 minutes of this I jumped off the bike and grabbed my iPod. No matter how high I turned my volume up I couldn’t seem to hear my music. Aside from all that, I felt great. Surprisingly my legs didn’t fatigue spite my run last night.
On a side note, have you checked out Neil’s blog? His double century looks intense.
P.S. I finally got my Jeep back after three weeks!
Winter Blues
Remember that first snow storm back in November? Remember how excited you where that it was snowing? Why is it that it turns from bliss to bust within a couple of months and what is it about the sun that brings a bounce to your step? I’ve been shuffling along this past week.
Thursday I went to the weight lifting class in the morning with a co-worker. I learned my lesson the week before – don’t try to do too much, ease into it but do it quickly! I went back to the gym after work and ran for 60 minutes. I haven’t run for about a week so I took it easy and brought up the speed. I stayed in a comfortable heart rate zone and was able to bring up my HR slowly hitting and going over my AT the last 5 minutes. 833 calories burned.
Friday was Matt’s class. We worked on Endurance, it was the same profile as last Sunday’s class, but this time I kept my head down and just focused on my cadence. I figured it out – Eric needs hearing aids. He’ll ask me a question during class. I’ll answer it, but after my response EVERY time, he’ll say’s “What?” It drives me crazy! 550 calories burned
Jody wasn’t able to teach this weekend so we had a couple of subs. Tina taught the first class. Once you get past the fact that she is an aerobic instructor then a cyclist teaching the class she isn’t that bad. Her music had me singing karaoke the whole hour. Dan taught the second hour. I don’t know what was up with him during that class because it was inconsistent. Good thing I already decided that I was going to do my own thing before it even started. I thought I might go for a run later that afternoon so I wanted to save a bit for later. 1056 calories burned
I didn’t run on Saturday, so on Sunday I had to get out there and do the run that I’ve wanted to do since last Tuesday. It was a different path, one that I know very well on my bike, but also one that would not be safe to do at night. After much negotiation with myself (I wasn’t in the mood) I headed out. I got two miles into the 10 mile run when I stopped turned around and walked back home. I wasn’t feeling it, I wasn’t enjoying one step of that run. That entire walk home I kept thinking about a century Carol, Paul, and I did this summer. I bonked, gave up at mile 102, got off the bike on a hill and wanted to walk the 6 miles back to the shop. I didn’t even know what I did until Paul yelled at me like he was a drill sergeant. I’ve bonked before, but I’ve never given up. I gave up then and I gave up on my run today. I don’t feel good when I give up. I come home, put on my shorts and jumped on my trainer for an hour. It was something, but not enough. 729 calories burned.
On a brighter note, the Tour of California started. For a tour that’s only 3 years old they have a lot of pros and fans that are attending the race to watch. I’m glad Verses is airing more of it then just highlights on Sunday.
Tonight is Don’s class.

I Love Working Out!
On Friday night I got to catch up with the Trailhead/Loons/Strong Heart team. It was nice seeing everyone and what they have been doing. I feel bad that I wasn’t able to catch up with everyone, but I know they read this blog so…Hi!
Saturday I missed Jody’s class. I tried to do a quick day trip to North Dakota with my brother-in-law to drop off a car for my nephew and to see my dad who wasn’t doing so well. We got about 120 miles from Minneapolis, towing a car in high head winds that caused the road to have very low visibility. We noticed a sign stating the highway was closed starting at the next town. There was nothing we could do except turn around and head back home.
Sunday I headed down to Matt’s 90 minute spin class in Chanhassen for anaerobic threshold/intervals. Bill and I sat in the front to give Matt a hard time, too bad Kenny didn’t show. Next time. I felt pretty good, but the pain in my face and my wet jersey said a different story. I’m used to “my bike” at Maple Grove. I know the tension, where I should start, where I should be at to be at a certain level. Needless to say my tension was too high, but I got a good workout. With 30 minute warm up, 1120 calories burned.
Bill, Matt and I had a nice conversation after class. Bill went out on his bike for 1.5 hours in -40 degree weather with windchill the night before and then ran before Sunday’s class (about the same temp). I called him crazy in my last blog (Kenny has other words), but as we discussed it really isn’t as crazy as us doing a century when it’s 102 degrees out.
Monday I went to Don’s class for endurance training. It is much harder to spin in the evening then in the morning. I don’t know what it is, could be I’m just used to the morning torture. 559 calories burned.
Tuesday I took the day off.
This morning I went to spin. Tracy was back, but as I said before - her pregnancy will not hold her back from giving us a good beating. And we were beaten. 616 calories burned.
Tomorrow morning is the weight lifting class on crack.
Jorge is heading down to the Tour to California. Have fun Jorge and don’t forget what I requested! I’m jealous.

Calorie Competition
Today’s spin class was just that, a calorie competition with a shot of insanity. Within a short amount of time we all hit our AT. Based on my average heart rate for that hour (156 BM) I did not come out of my AT too many times for most of the class. There was one distinct moment that I wasn’t sure if I could hold on. We were doing a seated hill climb, half way in I was praying we were almost done. I was wrong—only half way. After a few more times of hearing and following the commands of: “increase your tension a quarter turn” I was ready to lose it. I think if there was 30-60 more seconds I would have. Turns out I wasn’t the only one that thought that. 607 calories burned (50 calories more then last week). I didn’t win.
After class a girl sitting close to me asked how Jody’s class was. I responded: “Based on this class…worse.” Tomorrow I’m going to Jody’s class.
This weekend is supposed to get really cold again. Bill said he was heading out again on his single speed since it will be -30 below with windchill. What a nut! I think I’m going to try to get a run in this weekend outside, but pass if it’s below zero. I’m crazy, but not “Bill” crazy!
Oh, I didn't mention earlier this week—it's official I'm a Loon!

Sacrifice
On Monday I went to Don’s spin class which was anaerobic threshold/intervals. It was hard. Jaw clenching - towel in the mouth – type of workout. The whole class yelled “Uncle” after the first interval, there was four intervals. 517 calories burned.
Tuesday—nothing.
Wednesday I went to the gym in the evening to run, but it was so stinking hot with all the people that I couldn’t do what I wanted to do. Not to mention, I was forced to run on a treadmill that I wasn’t used to and after 20 minutes I almost did a face plant on that machine while running. Why do they have to have a class on the treadmills which takes up about 20 machines during peak hours? I opted to do cardio circuit training at that point. I went on the stair master (the one that looks like a flight of stairs) for 20 minutes without holding on. What a great workout. My heart rate hit AT a few times. Next was the Arc Trainer for 20 minutes. I had a miss conception that I was getting more out of that machine then I thought I was actually getting. I didn’t quite feel like I got a good workout in so I went home and sat on the trainer for an hour. 882 calories burned.
This morning I went to a weight lifting class. I think of myself as a fit person. I used to do a lot of heavy lifting before the days of cycling and I do a lot of cardio now. I thought this class would be no problem.
Holy crap. It was like weight lifting on crack. You had 10 seconds to get all your stuff, there was no waiting for anyone. Everything was at rapid speed. At one point during the class I had to put my hands on my knees to catch my breath. I should have grabbed weights that were lighter since you get tired after more then 10 reps. I kept thinking after every move "this is going to hurt tomorrow". Thank god it was only 45 minutes. There was 5 seconds of cool down and in amazing record of time everyone had their stuff away and was out the door. Did that class really happen? 231 calories burned.
I’m not a religious person, but Lent started this week and I thought it would be a good idea to give up something for 40 days. I thought about and consulted with a few siblings on what would be realistic. I don’t want to do this and give up within two days so I gave up candy and bad carbs, which means I replace that with healthier foods. I’m not a horrible eater, it’s the lack of control I have that is the problem. Currently I’m 1.5 days into this and my body is not happy with me. My body is well trained to eat crap I swear last night I smelled french fries and I was no were near a fast food restaurant. 38.5 days left.
Tomorrow is Matt’s class.
P.S. I’m still driving the Focus.

I did it.
As a cyclist, we are always concerned that we have the proper lighting for drivers to see us while we are riding, but I notice that some runners do not wear clothing that is noticeable for drivers to see them. Before I left for my run, I pulled off my taillight from my bike and hooked it to my hip. While I was running this guy in a SUV slowed down, rolled down his window, and yelled out at me, “Thanks for wearing a light!” I yelled back, “No probable”. I really should have said, “Thanks for not hitting me!” I’m glad he said something, it made my effort to be noticed appreciated. 1091 calories burned
My concern about hitting my running goal was based on a 1.5 hour spin class with Matt that morning and I had a 2.5 hour spin class with Jody the next day. Matt’s class went great, he turned his focus away from me for once and onto Bill’s heart condition and “the Grandmas”. Matt hates when others beat him, so the fact that Bill was wears his Peace Coffee jersey really got to him. He kept saying “Those guys from Peace Coffee with a heart condition will catch up.” It was quite funny! I couldn’t stop thinking about when Eric Marcotte killed him this summer and wasn’t even trying. That ride, although it was one we were pushing wind the whole time and it was at the end of the season, has to go down as one of my favorite. Thanks Eric!! I loved Matt’s idea about the ladies in the front of the room, who he called “the Grandmas”, should get a jersey that says “Team Grandmas—get the BEEP out of my way”. Comedy at 5:45am is much appreciated. 564 calories burned.
Saturday’s class with Jody was not physically hard it was mentally hard. I struggled the whole 2.25 hours. It was strange, what I enjoy doing normally (hill climbing) was the hardest and what I don’t normally enjoy (down on my arrow bars sprinting) was the easiest. 1033 calories burned.
Did anyone watch the Gophers vs Sioux hockey game this weekend? I’m a Sioux fan. What a great game! It ended in a tie (1,1). The Sioux’s top guy got kicked out for fighting within the first 7 seconds. For fighting—really—isn’t that part of the game? Later in the game, one guy started a fight so the ref violently pushed him into the penalty box. The Sioux’s coach was pissed about the ref’s actions and gave him the finger not knowing that the camera was on him. I loved that the announcers apologized for the vulgarity (please it’s hockey). They went into overtime, but after the OT was over (game over) three fights broke out. Once they got them separated and the teams were shaking hands…there was another fight. I’m not into violence, but with that much padding…how can you not? It’s just part of the game.
I am happy to announce, after 10 hours of head-scratching and customizing…my garage door is now fixed! Just in time for our piles of show we are getting today.
If I can get to the gym tonight, tonight is Don’s class and my long run in the morning.
