The Red River
12 years ago, a senior in High School (yeah Bill you are old), my hometown was dealing with the 1997 Red River flood in Grand Forks, ND. Today, Fargo/Moorhead—72 miles south of Grand Forks, is dealing with the Red River flooding again.
The Red River is one of the few rivers that flows North into Canada. Residents along the river have experienced colder than normal temperatures and twice as much snow then the Minneapolis area. This all combined with the ground still frozen and the ice chunks blocking the river’s current has caused Fargo to flood.
Why Fargo and not Grand Forks?
After the flood of ’97 the city of Grand Forks increased the size of the dikes several inches above the crest of the ‘97 flood and removed most of the home and small business within a half mile of the river—but today the city is not in the clear. The crest of the river is not predicted to happen until next week. Two of the three bridges have been closed. Fargo did not have the extent of damage Grand Forks received thus not increasing their dikes like Grand Forks.
I can just image what the residents of Fargo is going though. The flood of ’97 felt like we were in the middle of a war zone without the bombs. National Guards and trucks everywhere, sirens going off in different parts of town indicating that another part of the levy broke and that everyone in the area must try to get to safety as soon as possible. Those who still had a home were taking in everyone they could while they themselves were on the line trying to fight back the ever rising water of the river. After 48 hours of pure exhaustion—the entire town was told to evacuate.
Fargo is a larger town and has developed further West since I last called the town home seven years ago. In any case, I hope everyone is save.
I Love Cycling
Since Mother Nature decided that Minnesota was not done with winter and has blasted us with gloomy, rainy, and yes—snowy days this week. The weekly Afton ride was cancelled. Instead I decided to run on the hamster wheel at the gym this week. I said before I’m not fast at this thing called running—but for me, I’ve been trying to push the boundaries. Thanks to the few days I was able to get out last week on the bike—I feel stronger on my runs.
Tuesday I ran my average speed for 20 minutes on a flat incline. I was feeling good so I bumped up the speed a few notches. After 20 minutes, with the same speed, I moved into hill intervals. One choice word came out when I saw I had a steep incline for 2 minutes. The last 20 minutes I went back to the flat incline but bumped up the speed a few more notches. Wow, was my face red from the high heart rate and lack of oxygen to the blood cells—it was quite embarrassing. Even though I had a look of death in my eyes—I was still able to get out one good chuckle when I saw a Mr. T look-a-like at the gym. Danny Bonaduce and now Mr. T!! Who’s next?
A mere 10 hours later was Jody’s class. Too my amazement, I felt pretty good. Even went for a short—harder for me—run with Jody while her and Joe had a full conversation while I was just trying to stay alive.
Thursday night I was going to take it easy—stead pace run on the treadmill. Nothing crazy. Two minutes into my run I was feeling good so I bumped up my speed a few notches. Two minutes later I was still feeling good so I bumped it up two more notches. Two minutes later—still feeling good—why not? Two more notches. Three minutes letter—headphones died.
Thankfully I carry two types of headphones in my gym bag. After switching them out—I started where I ended. 7 miles later at pace I haven’t done since last year keeping my heart rate at an average 150—I felt GREAT! For the first time in a long time I didn’t feel like crap after running.
10 hours later—Matt’s class. Who would’ve known the game of Hot Potato would be so much fun! Mel, one of the oldest guys in class, had a different prospective when we kept handing him the Hot Potato (i.e. had to get out of the seat and sprint). Hey—spin class is not group fitness.

22 Riders and a Hurricane
Friday night I spun with Holly, Carol, and Diane for two hours—I would call my performance more of a zone 1 ride. I barely broke a sweet. I put in my time that morning in Matt’s spin class and interval running after class.
On Saturday, 22 people showed up for a 2pm group ride. I was expecting maybe 7 but 22—That was awesome! It was so much fun to catch-up with everyone since I haven’t seen some of them since last fall.
We all road together for most of the course. About ½ way the group split one group did about 34 miles (144 loop) another group did about 44 miles (Nealorador). You know, I’m going to come up with a route and call it the “El Mad–Onna”. :)
Amy and I rode together on 144 when the Nealorador group split into 3 groups. The wind wasn’t bad but we were close to the end of the stretch when a semi buzzed us too closely. We were holding on for dear life to our handlebars—our bikes were being sucked into the direction of the semi. I was so happy to see the second set of wheels on the semi which meant we were in the clear.
Dave H. and his friend showed up on MTBs. You know someone’s true endurance when they show up on fat-tires or on a single speed and can keep up with the group. Dave and I battled it out on Super Prime (Fat-Tire vs. Skinny Tire). I’m fully convinced he let me win Super Prime because the way he was riding those fat tires—skinny tires really didn’t have a chance.
Neal and I had a good conversation about the up-coming REGBRAI event in July. He is all set. The triple and the bell is on. His training is going well. He just needs to invest in a fanny pack and he is ready. 20,000+ riders—I have a feeling he will be easy to pick out. :)
Although I felt great after Saturdays ride, Sunday I had full intentions on wasting my day away watching bad TV, but I got a call from my friend Ryan who went on-and-on about how nice it was outside—I couldn’t resist. I went out for a ride 40 mile hill ride in the Medina area. The winds were so strong it felt like I was in a middle of a Hurricane! I’m ready for the first three races of the year.

Afton
Jen and I departed from Life Time Fitness for a 22-mile ride, I called the “C Ride” for that area. Nothing crazy, just a few steady climbs to get used to the area. Since Jen lives in the area she pointed out a few spots that made the lactic acid in my legs start to sturr just looking at those hills. Those would be for the B or A rides. One inparticular she called the Lollypop. Yep, that stick of the lollypop was like a wall. We’ll save that one for a special day.
Since I was feeling pretty good about my ride lastnight I thought I would attempt Jody’s spin class this morning. Last week I got a email from her asking why I wasn’t in class—dang can’t a girl sleep in? Guess where she took us on our virtual spin class ride? Yep—Afton.
Once we started my plan to get a good Jody tail-feather kicking changed plans to a easy zone 2 while the guys next to me were topping out at heart rates in the high 160’s. Yeah, half of them are on beta blockers, but still put in a good effort. I peddled a high of 140 averaging somewhere around 120. Wow—was that hard to accept. I’m either chilln’ on the couch or at 100%. There is no in between. Yeah, I know I have to work those easy workouts into my schedule, but I always feel like they are a waste of my time—I should’ve stayed in bed.
OHHHH—so about two months ago I blogged about running my first ½ marathon. Although I wasn’t happy with my performace I was pretty happy with my time. UNTIL—last night. Two of the players on the Biggest Loser beat my ½ marathon time. Yeah, it waas -20 degrees when I ran, BUT they did not have any time to train for the event AND they were heavier then me! That’s it—I WANT A DO OVER!

144 Rollers
The rollers weren’t as bad as I was expecting. Thanks Andy for slowing down while I struggled up a few of the hills. I hate to see what my performance would be like right now in a group setting on those rollers.
Tonight I’m meeting my new teammate in Afton to do our first night of Tuesday night hill training.

Suffer now—benefit later
Saturday (45+ degrees) I thought about riding, but with roads still icy at 9am I thought maybe today would be a better day to run. So I ran. 10 miles. I figured I better start working on my speed (cause I’m slow) so I did sprint intervals. It took about 5 miles to figure out timing—I know why so long? Well, as always I thought I could do more than I could—I finally gave in when I almost couldn’t control my breathing and almost started crying due to the pain. I haven’t felt that bad since the State Road Race when I was on lap 2/climb #2. Anyways, I settled on 2 minute sprints, 1 minute walking, 7 minutes jogging, repeat. Lesson learned.
Sunday (60 degrees) my legs were sore from the run, but I was not going to let a nice day slip through my fingers. I skipped Spin class (sorry Matt) since I felt that I would only be giving 50% of my daily effort towards riding outside if I was going to go to spin—100% outside sounded like a better option.
I waited until the streets were defrosted which gave me plenty of time to figure out the perfect clothing combination and to rehash the mental checklist for riding. Clothing—check, helmet and gloves—check, check, water bottles—check, camera, cell phone, whatever-else-I-think-I-need-in-my-pockets—check, lube chain—check, pump tires—almost forgot. That’s what I forgot to do last time! Which is why all those little hills felt like mountains. Front tire: 60 psi. Back tire: 80 psi. (I usually set mine at 100 psi each) How could I forget? That’s right—I was too excited to get out on a nice day.
Tires filled—I was ready to roll. It felt like everyone was out in the neighborhoods. I saw more casual riders in one day then I saw all of last year. I went out to the Medina area to ride—I can’t wait until everything turns green again, but it was still great to be out there. I wasn’t going to focus on my speed I just wanted to ride—I noticed, spite the headwind, my cadence was higher than expected and was rolling at a decent speed, and still had a reasonable heart rate. I would like to contribute it to my cross training in spin class. See Matt, talking during spin class can help your training.
After a couple of hours the wind got pretty old--90% of my ride was in headwinds. It seem the couple of hard hills I did was straight into the wind. Who needs to pay to be in a fancy wind tunnel sitting on a trainer? Come to the upper-Midwest and you could have hours of outdoor riding for free! I ended the day with 40 miles.
It's 60 degrees today! Again another fabulous ride is in my near future.
Duluth stage race is my focus for the next couple of months. I’ve been hearing horror stories about this mega hill—so my focus will be on hills. Long gradual ones I’ve got. Higher grade of incline within a short distance—there’s where I need to suffer for a little while. I’ve got it all worked out—Afton here I come!

They said 40+!!
OH—sorry I was getting ahead of myself.
For what felt like the last 6 months it been somewhere around 40 below, so 40 above is a big deal around these neck of the woods.
What shall I do with myself this weekend now that we have this balmy weather? Spin? Bike? Run? Why am I asking so many questions and being so picky—I’m going to do them ALL!
Today was Matt’s spin class. Since I was lazy this week it took twice as long to get ready, twice as long to spin out the cobwebs from the muscles, and twice as long to feel good. BUT after that was all said and done…I burned a couple more calories on the bike after class was over.

Surviving a 3 hour spin class
Matt and Jody provided us with a special Sunday 3 hour, no holds-bar, tail feather kicking spin class on Sunday. I wonder what Jody eats before class? She always has so much energy. I couldn’t believe how good I felt the entire 3 hours! I’ve done a three hour class once before, but got bored after 2 hours making the last hour extremely hard.
I’m a little disappointed that I didn’t win the Hot Potato prize. A signed autograph photo of Matt and one of Jody posted in my cube at work would have been perfect. The bell for my bike would be great for those group rides when Matt leaves me to fend for myself in the middle of god knows where and not to mention during those congested riding times at REBGRAI. And the other random crap—I mean treasures—would find some useful purpose.
Class ended about 10am and by 3am I was dead to the world. I slept about 10 hours that night.
My day off on Saturday was pretty interesting. I didn’t realize that I had so much pent-up anger. Especially when I hear about grade school bullies—no kids should go through that mess. Let’s just say if you have a neighborhood snow fort that needs to be taken down for good reasons and you don’t want your neighbors to be pissed off at you—I’m the one you should call. They all came out to watch, but no quos came out of any of their mouths. I was ready for their crap!

I cheated.
Here’s why:
Last night I went for a long fun—OUTSIDE! About 8 1/2-ish miles in our balmy 40 degree weather. AND—I went to Matt’s spin class this morning. AND—I had a pretty stress morning, so in order to keep my sanity a blueberry bagel with honey almond cream cheese was in order.
I know, I’m going to hell—but it was worth it.

Feeln’ Good
Last night I wanted to go for a long run, but didn’t want to deal with the windchill so I went to run on the hamster wheel at the gym.
20 minutes of a flat incline slowly increasing the speed during that time, followed by 30 minutes of intervals at that higher speed with a cool down of even a higher speed on a flat incline. I felt good. I had that feeling again of having fun while running (It comes and goes). Ending the evening with some ab work on the ball. I can’t wait to get out sometime this week for a long run in the balmy 40 degree weather!
This morning I went to Jody’s class. Somewhere deep down I hoped that she wouldn’t be up to par after her week vacation to Mexico sipping on margaritas. I’m now convinced that those margaritas were spiked with something other than tequila. She came back with a vengeance. We started out with jump (all of us are tapped-out on jumps this week so we all did our own thing), then extremely hard hills, then speed work. Each section had three rounds were you would count your revolutions trying to improve upon the last round. After round two I lost count—working so hard you long your thing coherently—so round three I had no idea if I did better or worst.
It’s always a good feeling to know that you came close to seeing Jesus but will live to attended another spin class.

Weekend for my Weekend
Friday morning was Matt’s class—same profile as Monday’s class. Bill said it best once class was over “What the hell was that?” Since I decided that I won’t give up running over the summer like I did last year—too hard to get back into it again in the Fall, I ran a few miles on the track after class.
My teammate Jackie had her baby on Thursday—Carlson was 8 lbs 13 oz. He came out as a 6 month old! I guess she had full right to be freaking out the month before that it was going to hurt a lot. All of us girls from the team went to see her and the little one after work on Friday. She already asked her doctor how long would she have to wait before she could race. :)
After all that oooh-ing and aaahh-ing I went up to Trailhead to participate in the 24 hour spin-athlon that the 2009 RAAM racers were putting on. As much as I wanted to ride longer I could only stand being on the trainer for 2 hours. Actually 1hr 45mins before I started complaining that everyone was going numb and that I had to go home.
Saturday morning I found myself waking up on the couch with the TV on. After much negotiation, I went to the gym to stair climb for an hour at a reasonable pace and to lift. I learned the next morning that I should have lifted lighter weights while doing squats. I was disappointed with the people watching at the gym—I usually get to watch a whack-o at his finest during that time of the day, but they were all normal.
That night I went to the bar with a couple of co-workers. No I didn't break my lent creed, I had water. We played this buck hunting game. Once you shot the gun you had to pump-it in order to shoot again—now don’t get dirty on this one. I’m not into guns much less video games, but after a few rounds of less than satisfactory performance I started nailing those bucks like I was using a semi-automatic!!
Sunday was Matt’s 90-min class. Although I was a little sluggish—I was not favoring this workout. 30 minutes of hearing Matt saying “2-3-4-down-2-3-4-up-2-3-4…” or “down-2-up-2…” was getting a little old after 60 seconds. It works to keep the class in check, but I think it’s in the best interest of the instructor to inform me when the 90 minute epic ride of transitions or jumps will take place so I can accidently oversleep the class.
My plan to go home after spin and pass out didn’t really happen. I ended up running around the northern suburbs purchasing the digital camera I’ve had my eye one for the past 6 months—Olympus Stylus 1050. Circuit City is having their final days of business close out sale and they had the camera in stock at 40% off. So watch out—you maybe feathered on this blog shortly!!
